OTTOMAN SYRIA As a state, Syria is a creation of Anglo-French diplomacy in the course of World War I. Syrians regard themselves as Arabs rather than Syrians, and until the establishment of Syria as a French protectorate, Syria was a geographical region stretching from Gaza in the south to Iskenderun (Alexandrette) in the north, from the Mediterranean to the Tigris River resp. the Arabian desert, characterized by a population of settled farmers and urban dwellers, an ethno-religious kaleidoscope in which the Arab speaking and Muslim elements dominated. The maps further up refer to the geographical region of Syria just described. The maps further below refer to the genesis of the Republic of Syria; for other subregions of the larger geographical region of Syria see Jordan, Palestine resp. Israel, Lebanon. |
