Prior to 1918, Croatia proper and Slavonia were tied in Dynastic Union to the Kingdom of Hungary; Dalmatia, from 1815 to 1918 was part of Austria-Hungary, Istria from 1815 to 1918 fully part of Austria-Hungary (Austrian Littoral), prior to 1797 partially Austrian, partially belonging to the Republic of Venice, as did all of Dalmatia except for the then independent Republic of Ragusa
