Republic of San Marino, 1860-1906



In 1860, Italy annexed the Romagna, hitherto a part of the Papal State. Now, San Marino was surrounded by Italian territory. In 1872, an ITALIAN PROTECTORATE over the tiny republic was proclaimed.
In 1901, the population of the republic was estimated at 9,500.
