In 1897 a federation of the statelets of Jelai, Jelebu, Johol, Kelang, Naning, Rembau, Segamat, Sungai Ujong, Alu Panah was created, under the name Negeri Sembilan, which joined the Federated Malay States.
After the period of Japanese Occupation (1942-1945), when British administration was restored, Negeri Sembilan became member of the Federation of Malaya (1946-1963) and since 1963 is member state of Malaysia.
Meanwhile the kaleidoscope of member states making up Negeri Sembilan has undergone changes; the current member states are Jelai, Jelebu, Johol, Rembau, Sungai Ujong/Seremban and Tampin.
