Mwanamutapa History of Southern Africa Matabele

History of the Changamire Kingdom

The CHANGAMIRE KINGDOM split off MWANAMUTAPA around 1490. Although GREAT ZIMBABWE was allocated to Changamire, Changamire long stood in the shadow of it's northern neighbour Mwanamutapa.
The Mwanamutapa gold trade declined, and from the 1750es on both Swahili and Portuguese traders were more interested in another commodity - African slaves. The Shona kingdoms were targetted by slave raiders.
In the 1820es the Matabele, under MZILIKAZI, split off the Zulu, migrated into modern Zimbabwe, where they conquered the Changamire Kingdom and subdued the Shona people.
