During the Petrine Administrative Reform of 1708, a first, larger Kiev Gubernia was established; in 1781, Kiev Namestichestvo (with a smaller territory) was established, which in 1796, following the Third Polish Partition, was established, with most of its territory having been acquired by the Russian Empire, from Poland-Lithuania, in the Second Polish Partition of 1793.
